Basic Attention Token is a decentralized, open-source utility token, designed to power a digital advertising platform built into the Brave web browser. Both the token and the browser were created by Brian Bondy and Brendan Eich. Their goal was to solve inefficiencies and privacy violations that plague the digital ad industry creating a secure, effective, and equitable advertising environment for creators and users. BAT was launched with an ICO in 2017.
Brave is open-source and privacy-centered as it is designed to block trackers and malware software. By joining the browser, users can sign up for Brave Rewards, a system that allows them to earn BAT tokens for viewing customized ads. The objectives of the BAT platform are to reward users for their attention, display fewer custom ads, and improve the content presented. Moreover Brave matches ads to users using a machine learning algorithm without any tracking or data collection.
